Starting with freediving… again!
It’s been a while since my last post on our Sharkbait website. A fast search learns me it’s been almost 15 months! wow, time flies when you’re too busy with other stuff!
To be honest, freediving hasn’t been in my life too much in this last period. Something to do with a divorce, being there for the kids, new high demanding job, new girlfriend and some other interesting things that are happening in my life.
It’s not that I didn’t want to go freediving. I just couldn’t make the time for it. And even more importantly; I just didn’t have fun with it anymore. But, as it turns out, freediving is a hard addiction! While my performance in freediving may have dropped to zero, my water abilities for sure haven’t. Finally I’m able to swim like I want to. 1500 meters crawl, no problem!
So, with new water skills under my wings Sanne and I started playing again for the last 3 months in the deep 5 meter pool in the Tongelreep. No stopwatch, no time! Just some lead, a mask and loads of fun by blowing bubble rings and other stupid stuff underwater.
In the last few weeks something remarkable was happening; sometimes I just couldn’t resist looking at the clock before going down and noticing that I was still doing 90-120 second fun dives. And last time I even wanted to some dynamic without fins at 5 meters depth again! Wow, the little competitive beast in Jorg was awakening again.
But before I throw myself in a 7 day hardcore freedive schedule that includes of RFC drywalks and sits on the toilet and a strict diet of oysters, I want to make sure that I don’t ruin the moment by overdoing it again. I don’t want to repeat my static burnout from 2003 again, from which I never recovered!
Yesterday I had a talk with Sanne and told him I want to start over again, just enjoying some pool work. Very carefully trying some easy schedules and targets again. Too start with maybe 1 time a week in the pool and as the weather is getting better maybe even some outdoor dives (I only did 2 outdoor freedives in the netherlands in 2008!)
As the rest of my sportive training is going pretty well; running, swimming, fitness. And I’m blogging about that on my personal website, I thought it would be fun for the team and the people closely to me, to write a blog, maybe once a week, about my journey back into the world of freediving disciplines! Lets see what I’ve learned from the past!
Oh and btw; I even found some energy to write for Shark Freediving again! I won’t promise that it will be back like it was before, but when I have the time and found something worth posting, I will for sure post it over there.
