My Video's from the Liege competition

This is a post by Sanne Buurma.

Last night I edited the video material we shot at the Liege competition last weekend.

The first video is Dynamic with Fins (DYN), a first timer for me at a competition to use a monofin.

httpvhd://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdQLV4OEyHw

The second video is Dynamic No fins (DNF), especially focussed on technique and minimal amount of strokes to reach 25 meters.

httpvhd://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxfhfGWE-7Q

Although my mission was to reach the 25 meters in 2 strokes, the positive buoyancy made it harder to accomplish. I took 2,5 strokes for 25 meters, but the speed is still at the level I like it to be.

Enjoy the videos.

Reporting Sandi Bitenc's world record attempt

This is a post by Sanne Buurma.

Sandi Bitenc

First and foremost I’d like to say that Sandi Bitenc earns great respect from me and any freediver…actually. Last weekend he pulled off the amazing 24 hour marathon dynamic freediving for the Guinness book of World Records. Jorg and I set out to meet up with him for the event and we would do some reporting from the event. But what started as a somewhat small reporting schedule, soon grew into a (almost) 24 hour live stream of footage from the event.

Sanne & Jorg

How we did all this…
Jorg and I were at a small cafe near the pool (with some free wifi of course ;) ) preparing for the event and it popped into our minds that we had the opportunity to use live-streaming from a mobile phone to do the coverage report. As these services have been growing lately, we agreed to just go for it and see where it would go. We started reporting with the idea of just streaming the every hour the first few hours, half-way through and at the end. But it was so much fun to do and the reactions coming in from the freediving community made that we went for the coverage of the whole event.

We had a seperate office from the swimming pool for our headquarters to be setup. In this office Sandi had setup the streams of 4 camera’s from each end of the pool, the whole lane and a screen featuring his progress. He needed this to record all his actions for the Guinness committee, so they can verify his record and thus this will take some time for them to go through ;) . In this office along side the pool we had the perfect overview of all things happening and so we agreed to go for full coverage. Every hour I picked up the mobile phone and Jorg walked with me for the comments on what the progress of Sandi’s attempt was at that time. In between the hours we streamed the view of his total progress from the screen. This left us with just enough time for Jorg to update the shark-freediving blog and for me to shoot photo and video material to edit, mount and upload to youtube in between the hourly reports. As we progressed into the night, at some point we took turns in the reporting alongside the pool, as one of us took a small sleep, the other could report the event. In all we both did not get more sleep than 1 hour and 20 minutes maybe…but that’s worth it!

Final 6 hours
The last 6 hours of the event Jorg had to be the formal witness for the event and could not walk alongside the pool anymore, so I walked the camera around and commented where I could, returning to Jorg for his comments and to relay the messages from the freedivers watching the live stream. Seeing all the responses and Sandi receiving all the good luck wishes and congratulations was great to be a part of.

From a freediver point of view to get a real good impression what Sandi was doing, I joined him in the pool to do a few dynamic laps with him in the lane next to him. I mounted the GoPro camera on my head and started freediving with him…. It’s just an grueling schedule what he was doing. To be honest after six lanes I would have to say I was getting short on breath, of course I was using bi-fins and not all to streamlines, but this is really intense and deserves my greatest respect! What an athlete!

Difficulties
Of course we had some difficulties as it was our first ever live reporting event. Sometimes the sound would drop from the live feed, or the feed would stutter…and of course this would happen on the most important moments ;) So for the final hour we really put all our efforts in to show you what we were experiencing and for the viewers to see the final laps from the event!

Concluding
Apart from the small problems, we had a great time reporting and we do hope everybody who’d joined us liked the live-coverage as much as we enjoyed the event.

Jorg and I congratulate Sandi on the very impressive performance and would also like to thank him for having us over and taking good care of us, even though he was in there doing the dynamics he really thought this thing through, organized it into detail and thus making it an awesome event with an even more awesome result! 51,1 km’s > 1022 laps in a 50 meter pool… Hard to grasp, but a stunning world record!

Outdoor freediving GoPro Video

This is a post by Sanne Buurma.

I spent last night creating the movie clip from the GoPro Hero camera footage we shot last week during our Outdoor freediving training. The images it made turned out to be very impressive and I had to boggle my mind to see how to fit it all into a nice looking video clip.

Enjoy…

Testing: Go Pro Helmet Hero Wide-angle camera

This is a post by Sanne Buurma.

683_large_herowide01Besides the fact that Jorg was on a roll yesterday during training, we tested my new gadget; the Go Pro Helmet Hero Wide-angle camera . This all started with a nice video (click here) we’d seen from our fellow dutch freedivers from OVH. The video images looked so super cool, I just couldn’t resist to get one myself…

Not only does it feature possibilities to mount it on multiple stands and thus on almost any location, but even better it features a small underwatercasing with a specification to a depth of 30 meters. One might think that such a camera must be quite big, but I was very surprised how small this camera is, even within it’s casing.

683_large_ghhw5170-683x426-01I ordered the Helmet version from their website, which comes included with a wide variety of mount-stands and straps/bands to wear the camera on a helmet or directly on your head. The only thing I did not order from America were the batteries and the 2GB SD card. As these are also easily bought here in the Netherlands conforming my own battery charger.

The test
While Jorg was doing his static schedule I just mounted the Go Pro Hero camera on the head-band and adjusted it to where I thought it would focus on about 2 meter in front of me. I went down to the 5m deep bottom in the Tongelreep along side Jorg a few times to test a few different techniques. As the outcome isn’t reviewable instantly I did not vary the parameters too much.

After the depth stuff, I did some filming of Jorg’s dynamics with and without fins. Seeing in a result that my arms stroke is getting in the picture like a first person shooter kind of perspective. So adjusting this parameter by freediving with my legs kick only proved to be giving the desired result. Then it was my turn to do some freediving training and Jorg proposed to me that I wear the camera head-band backwards to be filming my leg stroke. Adjusting the camera angle turned out to be tricky and needs some testing to find the proper angle to make a good shot for filming the leg stroke.

I compiled a video clip, featuring the different stuff we recorded during our freediving session last night.

httpvhd://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-v8kz1oVoI

And Saturday we’re going for the Bosmolenplas in Panheel again and I’ll certainly take the camera with me to see how it works in the outdoor environment.

Concluding
This is a great camera which will certainly bring you some fantastic wide-angle shots of anything you want to film. The picture quality is somewhat lower then the standards these days, but then again what more do you expect from a camera that size and all it’s capabilities. The 2 GB SD, which is the maximum size it will allow, is more than enough to do your filming. In our way of using the camera, we’re unlikely to get the SD card full, as that is good for 56 minutes of filming. I didn’t even mention the other capabilities, but read the specs on the website and you’ll know this is a camera you want to add to your inventory, as the price is good compared to all it’s possibilities.

Video: Bizzy Blue Hole 2008

This is a post by Sanne Buurma.

Last year’s Bizzy Blue hole competition was a successful event for me. I’ve set new personal bests on 3 depth disciplines; -40m in CWT, -35m in CNF & 33m in FIM. Marieke made some excellent footage of these freedives and I found some time to combine the footage with the results from my D3 freediving watch.

httpvhd://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8PMNyn5IDg

These are the statistics from the different dives (keep in mind that the data shown below is from my own watch not the competition watch. The competition watch is attached to the wrist reaching for the tag.)

CNF

CNF – Dynamic No Fins
Dive time: 1 minute 33 seconds
Max depth: 36 meters
Announced depth: 35 meters
Judge: White card

FIM

FIM – Free Immersion
Dive time: 1 minute 16 seconds

High Definition Video testing

puredigital_flipminohd.jpgLittle over a month ago I purchased a nice little gadget which lets me record in High Definition quality (720p). The gadget is just as small as a phone and weighs even less. It’s a Flip Mino HD and it brings mobile HD video to your doorstep. So the perfect opportunity for me to test it and thus I’m bringing it to the freediving we do.

Check out this small video clip in HD ;)

httpvhd://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLQQQ5fKww8

This is just a short impression clip we shot during the last 2 training sessions (The last run of 1m 30s static schedule of Indoor & Outdoor freediving in Bosmolenplas, Panheel), so far I think the FLip Mino HD can bring us that extra footage we can use in our video clips ยป enriching the freediving experience like we do in the moment.

Now all we need is a underwater casing for this small and mobile HD recorder, as they only feature an underwater casing for the Flip Ultra.
